The story behind krittrs.com and the spelling of KRITTRS…
Growing up, most teenagers get their first job in high school at a McDonald’s or a convenience store. I was always interested in animals and instead, my mom and I started a business raising small animals for pet stores. This was back when there were more Mom ‘n Pop stores around, and few, if any, chains like Petsmart and Petco.
My mom raised primarily guinea pigs – typically caring for 80-100 breeding guinea pigs at any given time. I raised primarily rats, mice, and gerbils. We had an insulated and heated building the size of a 3-car garage dedicated to our small animals. Over the years, we dabbled in all kinds of critters, including the well-know animals like rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, and llamas, as well as some exotics like short-tailed opossums, fat-tailed gerbils, African pygmy mice, coatimundis, and even a fox named Sylvia.
Around the time I turned 16, my mom and I had the idea to put the word ‘critters’ on our licence plates. WI plates are only allowed 7 letters, however, so we shortened it by removing the ‘e.’ Since my name began with a ‘K,’ I ended up with the license plate KRITTRS, and my mom got CRITTRS.
So, that’s the story behind krittrs.com. I no longer have any critters besides my 2 dogs and 1 cat, but I now have 20+ fish tanks – they are easier to maintain in the real adult world where we all have regular jobs. And I have to feed my addiction somehow. 🙂
